Orange County Service Expansion
and Grade Crossing Enhancements
This project was the largest single contract “Quite Zone” project ever accomplished in the United States. The project involved station and track capacity expansion and improvements to 52 at-grade crossings; improvements included extensions to existing median islands, installation of safety railings and gates, upgrades to traffic and railroad signals, utility improvements, and landscaping. The entire work corridor was along live tracks where trains travel at speeds up to 90 MPH. During this project, we completed 35 live track cutovers. Daily rail traffic averaged 70 freight and passenger trains creating a logistical and safety challenge. Due to our close coordination, the passenger and freight traffic never experienced delays during this project. All work was performed in a densely populated urban environment with heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
