Overview
The Port of Long Beach (POLB) Middle Harbor project was part of a 9-year, $1.2 billion program that will upgrade wharfs, water access, and storage areas, and significantly expand the on-dock rail yard in the area. Herzog was the managing partner in a joint venture to renovate and reconstruct Pier E. Phase 1 included construction of 32 crane rails and automated stacking crane foundations, a rail yard compressed air system and compressor building, sewer, water, storm drain, electrical, and communication systems, and the relocation of oil, gas, and utility lines. The project also included the connection of the Pier E terminal to the Pier F container terminal by filling an additional 40 acres of Slip 1, creating one consolidated, 304-acre container terminal.
