Overview

This new-start LRT project included the construction of a 4.3-mile double track system in a dense urban environment with 39,000 ft of embedded track, 6,700 ft of ballasted track, special trackwork including a turnback track, three passenger stations, overhead catenary system (OCS), traction power substations (TPSS), and a Train-to-Wayside Communications (TWC) system and signals. To accommodate the new alignment, Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Way was widened 15 ft on each side to allow the entire LRT guideway to run at-grade in the road’s center median. Approximately 100 structures were demolished to widen the road. Civil improvements included 20 walls totaling 50,000 sf, three soil nail walls, numerous rock facing retaining walls, approximately 7,000 lf of cast-in-place (CIP) retaining walls, one mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining wall, and one sound wall. Roadway construction included new concrete roadways, curbs, gutters, pedestrian crossings, and sidewalks for the full length of the project and the installation of street lighting and traffic signal systems. Utility work included a new storm drain and sanitary sewer system, water main, communications, overhead power relocated underground, and a new natural gas main.
