The Port of Los Angeles (POLA) recently awarded the $61M Berths 302-305 On-Dock Railyard Expansion contract to a Herzog and Larison Construction Corp joint venture.
This project will see the expansion of Berths 302-305 with five additional loading tracks.
Berths 302-305 are currently used by Fenix Marine Services as a container transfer and storage yard. The joint venture’s project site is 2.85 acres within an overall 300 acre facility.
Each of the five new loading tracks will be constructed using 136 RE continuously welded rail (CWR) on concrete ties and timber ties. In total, 12,000 linear feet of track will be built. The three existing tracks at Berths 302-305 will be reused as part of this expansion. Once the project is complete, the capacity of Berths 302-305 will be expanded by a projected 520,000 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). This will allow shipping containers to be loaded directly onto trains from cargo ships and reduce approximately 2,000 truck trips a day.
In addition to the new track construction, improvements will be made to the berths. Improvements include realignment of the three existing tracks, site earthwork and grading, asphalt and concrete paving, drainage structures, and utility installations and relocations. New train signals will be installed, including a Train-in-Motion System weighs and monitors trains while they move across the new storage tracks.
This is Herzog’s ninth project at the Port of Los Angeles. The first job at the port was in 1996 – Lomita to Badger Road Railroad Improvement. This was a $22M job that added five miles of new Class 1 railroad access into the Port. We are proud to build on our nearly three decade relationship with the Port of Los Angeles delivering world class rail infrastructure to enhance critical supply chain logistics.
“Herzog is excited to continue our great relationship with the Port of Los Angeles. We will continue to bring an exceptional project on time and under budget. The Herzog/Larison joint venture looks forward to working with all the Subcontractors and suppliers,” Scott Norman, Executive Vice President of Construction, National Construction, said.
“Kicking off our ninth project with the Port of Los Angeles is a great reminder of the successful relationship we’ve built over the years, and our joint venture is excited to keep that momentum going with our partners at POLA,” Craig Ebersold, Senior Vice President of Pursuits and Development, said.
This project is being delivered with the bid-build delivery method. Construction is expected to begin in early 2025 and be completed in 2027.
