Women in Construction Week: Teresa Morales

Women in Construction Week is celebrated March 5-11, 2023. This year’s theme, ‘Many Paths, One Mission’, celebrates the different journeys women have taken toward the same goal: strengthening and amplifying the success of women in the construction industry. Take a look at all four of our outstanding female Herzogians featured here and on social media.

What does Women in Construction (WIC) Week mean to you?
This week is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of women in the industry. It is a time to encourage other women to join the industry by showing them the many great opportunities available both in the field and in the office.

Share a moment where you felt inspired to be a woman of construction.
Even though I do not work directly in the field any longer, I feel inspired knowing I am part of the team with the support I provide to the project.

Tell us about your experience working as a laborer.
I previously worked as a track laborer on a crew installing embedded track on the Sound Transit Rainer Valley Central Link Light Rail project. My duties varied from day to day. One week I would be installing rail boot and the next I’d be helping move CWR strings down Martin Luther King Blvd. I was also in charge of doing the layout for one of our subcontractors that were using a curbing machine. Working in the field was very satisfying seeing the daily progress of the Project. I also enjoyed the variety of the work. If there was a need then I was there. The work was very demanding and we worked long hours which created some great friendships along the way. It was very important to always be aware of my surroundings and watch out for my co-workers so we all made it home safely each day.

Why did you choose this career path?
At first because I enjoyed working outdoors and I wasn’t afraid of hard work or to get my hands dirty. Now, working in the office I was able to grow and learn new skills that challenged me.

What is your favorite part of working in this industry?
My favorite part about working in this industry is being part of a team. Working together on a common goal embracing “Power of the Team.”

What advice would you have for other women entering the construction industry?
My advice for women entering the construction industry would be to bring the best version of yourself every day. To work hard and bring your skills to the team. If you do not understand something do not be afraid to ask questions.

Fun fact about me:
I enjoy growing herbs in my raised garden bed made from a repurposed wooden crate that track materials were shipped in.
