Overview
The Caltrain Express Program, known as CTX, prepared the Caltrain commuter rail corridor for the 79 mph “Baby Bullet” express train service. The CTX Program was divided into a north and south segment – NCTX and SCTX. Between the two segments, work included 90,000 cy of earthwork, 117,514 ft of ballasted tie track, 295,358 tons of ballast, 87,405 concrete ties, 88 turnouts, and 17 crossovers. Work involved the construction of a third and fourth mainline overtake in several areas of the rail corridor, new high-speed crossovers (50 mph), rebuilding existing mainlines from the subgrade up, tie renewals, joint elimination, replacement of three bridges, an expanded passenger station platform and two new stations including a pedestrian under track cut-and-cover tunnel and elevator towers, and upgrading the entire signal system to a new Centralized Train Control (CTC) system. Work was completed while maintaining existing mainline rail traffic for Caltrain commuter service, Amtrak, and Union Pacific Railroad (UP) freight service.
