Overview

This project was a 5.1-mile-long twin tunnel subway extension with 10.2 miles of track. Work included 53,656-ft of 115-lb. direct fixation running rail, 57,244-ft of third rail, isolated track slabs, three turnouts, three crossovers, three double crossovers, crossings and connecting tracks, 25 insulated joints, and 12,000 sf of safety walkway. Special track that mitigates noise and vibration was installed by embedding the rail in a concrete slab that is placed on rubber pads to alleviate the passage of sound. This was the first time in North America such a technique was installed on a passenger rail transit system.
