Overview

This light rail extension project included a new 10 mile double track system beginning south of Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) Warm Springs Station in Fremont, through Milpitas and ending in the Berryessa area of north San Jose. Track installation included 71,000 ft of ballasted track, 14,000 ft of direct fixation track, and 18,000 ft of floating slab track for a total of 19.5 LRT track miles with third rail. The project alignment required urban construction in a mix of light and heavy industrial zones and residential neighborhoods and adjacent to a Union Pacific Railroad (UP) corridor. Additional project scope included two new passenger stations, demolition of existing track and UP track relocation, 530,000 cy of excavation, 333,000 cy of spoil haul off, 42,000 cy of backfill, 1,000,000 sf of shoring, 190,000 cy of concrete, and 100,000 piles driven, traction power subsystems (TPSS), train control systems, highway/rail crossing protections, and third party utility relocations.
