Overview
This light rail system expansion project featured the construction of 12.1 miles of ballasted track in a narrow right-of-way in an urban environment. The alignment included nine miles of double track and three miles of single track, 20 at-grade crossings, an overhead catenary system (OCS), 12 traction power substations (TPSS), 11 new stations with a combined 4,959 vehicle parking spaces, one relocated station, ten LRT bridges including a 1,532-ft-long, 11 span rail structure over the six-lane 6th Avenue, two LRT tunnels, three vehicular bridges, a 4.26-mile bike path, three pedestrian bridges and one pedestrian tunnel built under elevated guideway, 115 retaining wall segments, 10,000 ft of noise wall, reconstruction of local streets and roadways, and significant replacement, relocation, adjustments, and protection of existing and private utilities, and storm drainage. The final integration of the LRT system involved a tightly coordinated series of track realignments and systems adjustments to tie the new West Rail Line into the existing C and E lines to provide access to Denver Union Station.
