KC Streetcar Constructors, a joint venture of Herzog Contracting Corp. and Stacy and Witbeck, Inc., has been awarded the Construction-Manager-at-Risk contract to begin pre-construction activities for the Kansas City Streetcar Main Street Extension project.

After more than three years of service, the KC Streetcar exceeded eight million rides in early 2020. KC Streetcar Constructors (KCSC), a joint venture of Herzog Contracting Corp. and Stacy and Witbeck, Inc., has been awarded the Construction-Manager-at-Risk (CMAR) contract to begin pre-construction activities for the Kansas City Streetcar Main Street Extension project. The new 3.6-mile extension will continue south from Union Station and connect two of the largest employment centers in the area, the Central Business District and the Country Club Plaza. The route will include 16 streetcar stops on Main Street through Midtown, Westport, the Museum District, and end at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) campus. The existing vehicle maintenance facility will also be expanded to accommodate additional streetcars for the system.

In 2015, KCSC successfully completed the construction of the original 2.2-mile modern streetcar system, which runs from River Market to Union Station in downtown Kansas City, MO. In addition, Herzog Transit Services, Inc. was contracted to operate and maintain the line. Since the grand opening in 2016, the streetcar system is still seeing an increase in ridership with more than eight million rides to date.

The project is one of the City’s largest transportation initiatives and will improve mobility, safety, and economic opportunities for the metropolitan area of Kansas City. Construction will begin in late 2021, with the new extension expected to open by 2025.
