Overview
This rail yard project includes the construction of approximately 1,200 ft of ballasted track yard leads, storage tracks will be shifted, and 2,370 ft of new track will be added to expand trainset storage capacity on site. This project is located south of downtown Seattle, WA at Amtrak’s King Street Coach Yard which services Amtrak’s Cascades passenger trains and Sound Transit’s Sounder commuter rail trains. Herzog will reconfigure six rail yard tracks to improve locomotive and passenger car movements between the mainline and the equipment maintenance building within King Street Coach Yard’s east yard. Project work will be completed in four phases to accommodate ongoing Amtrak and Sound Transit rail yard operations and equipment maintenance services. At Holgate Street, the existing grade crossing will be realigned through the street directly to the west of its current alignment as a part of Track 2’s realignment. Approximately 1,100 tons of asphalt will be laid to reestablish track crossings and bridge areas between pavement sections where yard tracks were demolished. A mechanical storage shed and security kiosk will also be relocated on site as part of the yard’s reconfiguration work.
