Overview
This express intercity passenger rail project consists of building new Class 6 and 7 track infrastructure between Cocoa and Orlando International Airport. The Zone 3 east-west corridor contains 30 route miles of Class 7 track in a sealed corridor to facilitate speeds up to 125 mph. The project is entirely greenfield construction. Project features include 300,000 cubic yards of excavation, 5.4 million cubic yards of embankment fill, 865,000 square feet of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls, 18 new bridges, and three underpasses. As the dedicated track subcontractor, Herzog constructed 42.7 miles of Class 7 track. Most of the 35 mile rail corridor is single track with a seven mile segment of double track. To build this higher-speed Class 6 and 7 track, Herzog crews placed 456,000 linear feet of continuous welded rail (CWR), 114,450 concrete ties, and over 300,000 tons of ballast. The project also included the installation of a No. 32 turnout; this is one of only two No. 32 turnouts in the U.S.
