Overview
In January 2025, Herzog, in partnership with its joint venture partner, was awarded the operations and maintenance contract for the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail System (HBLRS). The HBLRS, a light rail transit network operating under the jurisdiction of NJ TRANSIT, spans 20.6 miles along the Hudson River waterfront in Hudson County, NJ, and comprises 24 stations situated across surface, elevated, and tunneled rights-of-way. The system’s fleet of 52 electric light rail vehicles is powered by overhead catenary and operates at speeds up to 55 miles per hour. Utilizing a proof-of-payment fare collection model, the HBLRS serves more than 51,000 daily riders. NJ TRANSIT continues to evaluate opportunities for system growth, including a potential westward extension to Route 440 and the Northern Branch Extension into Bergen County.
