Overview
This light rail project was a 6.6-mile double-track system extension through heavily congested neighborhoods between Culver City and downtown Santa Monica and runs along the old Southern Pacific Railroad right-of-way and in the center and curb lanes of Exposition Boulevard and Colorado Avenue. As the project’s dedicated track subcontractor, Herzog’s scope of work included the construction of 44,820 ft of 115-lb. ballasted, direct fixation, and embedded track, special trackwork, and 16 grade crossings. Additional project elements completed by others included seven stations – three elevated and four at-grade, three park-and-ride facilities, five bridge structures totaling one mile of elevated guideway, retaining walls that supported embankments to transition from an at-grade to an elevated alignment, removal of the existing Southern Pacific railroad tracks, utility relocations, traffic maintenance, and a new bicycle path adjacent to the alignment.
