Overview

This project involves the full build-out and implementation of PTC safety technology as a non-vital overlay system on the entirety of MRL’s mainline. This involves the installation of new and modified wayside signal infrastructure and power cables across more than 655 route miles on MRL’s 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 10th Subdivisions. The project included the installation of 351 new wayside signal houses, 241 new power drops, 33,000 distinct underground borings, 133 switch machines, four signal cantilevers, 315 insulated joints, and new signal masts and signal heads. Work was performed in remote, mountainous areas between Billings, MT and Sandpoint, ID with significant right-of-way access constraints. All phases of work were planned around 26 daily BNSF freight trains.
